In the summer of 2026, the heat wave in Vienna, with high temperatures day and night, gives many of us a palpable, frightening sense of what the climate change we have caused will mean for us in the near future and means for many people already. “Walking on Ice” is a seemingly personal work that actually reflects on societal responsibilities and consequences as I walk through a future that is melting away beneath our feet. For this work, I developed ice shoes that function as sculptural objects and are performative in that they transform and melt as soon as they are exhibited. After putting on these ice shoes, I walk from my studio through the streets of Vienna until the shoes have melted or the ice has broken into small pieces.
